GERD FAQ

GERD FAQ's

What treatment options do we offer?

Our Division offers a full range of treatment options, including medicines, surgery and endoscopic therapies. The two primary treatments for GERD are laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication and EsophyX.  EsophyX is performed completely endoscopically (without external incisions).

Can you perform this minimally invasively?

Yes.  Both procedures are minimally invasive.

What is the recovery period?

Following a laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication, return to normal activity is 3-4 weeks.  If your job requires heavy lifting, we may suggest 4-5 weeks.  EsophyX is less invasive, so return to normal activity is a bit quicker, but we still recommend no heavy lifting for 3 weeks to allow for appropriate healing.

One’s diet is restricted following any procedure for up to 4 weeks.

How long am I in the hospital?

Both procedures typically require an overnight stay in the hospital.

Are GERD medications required after surgery?

Typically patients are able to discontinue use of daily medications for reflux immediately.

What are the typical long-term results?

There is ample data regarding the long-term success of laparoscopic Nissen.  After two years, about 95% of patients are still completely satisfied with resolution of their heartburn.  At 5 years the rate drops to 85% due to the mechanics of the wrap loosening.  Results will vary based on risk factors and individual characteristics.

EsophyX has been performed for three years in the US and Europe. Early results have been good in select patients. Symptom satisfaction and medication usage is improved in most patients. Long term data is being collected.

How many EsophyX performed here?  How many Nissen’s performed here?

We have performed well over 500 laproscopic antireflux operations at Ohio State, and have experience with many minimally invasive approaches to diseases of the esophagus.  Laparoscopic repair has been the standard for fifteen years at OSU.  We were the first center in the U.S. to perform the Esophyx and thus, have the longest experience of any American center for this type of treatment for GERD, with over 50 EsophyX procedures have been performed at OSU.
