Our Mission

The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery (CMIS) at Ohio State is dedicated to the achievement of excellence in patient care, clinical training, research, and outcomes studies pertaining to the techniques and technology of minimally invasive surgery.

Our Functions

Patient Care

The Center will further develop and maintain the highest level of efficient patient care, utilizing state-of-the-art equipment and techniques in minimally invasive surgery. By providing this type of care, we intend to increase our market share through the development of new product lines, which will be disease specific units within the Center. The Center will provide the highest level of clinical training in all aspects of innovative technology and procedures.

Education

Structured programs in laparoscopic education will be provided to residents, fellows, and medical students. In addition, courses will be offered to practicing physicians throughout the region to teach techniques in minimally invasive surgery. This is accomplished through a structured, didactic, practical and large animal laboratory experience.

Research

The Center is continuing preliminary basic science research projects related to minimally invasive surgery. The expertise of basic and applied science researchers at Ohio State is drawn upon to develop interdisciplinary projects of mutual interest. The Center offers seed grants to investigators for development of initial data to allow application for outside funding sources.

Outcomes

The outcomes studies program is a cooperative effort between the CMIS and the Center for Health Outcomes, Policy and Evaluation Studies of Ohio State. The aims of the program are to monitor and improve the clinical processes, to assist in administrative and external reporting requirements, and to train individuals in outcome measurement and the use of outcomes in clinical decision making.
