Research in the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery (CMIS) focuses on:

  • developing new minimally invasive surgical techniques
  • refining existing techniques
  • testing innovative devices and procedures
  • surgical training
  • interdisciplinary collaborations to contribute to the diagnosis, treatment, and successful outcome of disease.


CMIS faculty and fellows, with the assistance of a full-time clinical research coordinator and a visiting postdoctoral researcher develop and conduct research in:

  • ventral and inguinal hernia repair techniques
  • robotic surgery
  • bariatric surgery and outcomes
  • gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES)

In addition, CMIS participates in industry-sponsored multicenter clinical trials to evaluate innovative devices, equipment, and techniques.
